November 15, 2009 - Bicycle ride
A warm night. For an hour and a half, up the side of Queens and down to the top of Manhattan, I watched this sunset. Then it was dark. I rode 29 miles.
I saw:
the red truss of the Hell Gate bridge (it hangs low and oddly put me in mind of a sow's udder);
the concrete shell of a half-constructed building lit so that it looked like ruins;
whole buses up on hydraulic lifts for repairs, their backing shells removed, guts exposed;
a Mexican Motorcycle Club.
It turned dark in the Bronx and I was under an expressway, lost and alone. But as it grew darker I could see better that I was not alone. There were silhouettes all around me, people wandering. There are humans absolutely everywhere. I find myself feeling very polite up there. I feel like I am visiting.
