October 7, 2009 - Bicycle ride
On the way in I considered a project in which I would take a picture of the same thing every day for a set amount of time--a wall, a puddle, a parking space--thus investigating the nature of time and urban life with my characteristic pomposity. Then realized I've been going to work every weekday for nearly five years and what do I have to show for those commutes in their various aspects? Very little, very very little. What if I had photographed the sky every day? What if I had noted the characteristics of one person seen? Imagine the art lost, the moments un-unraveled, all that time squandered on plain old life. Great mountains of pretension would have already been scaled. Instead: plateau. As I thought these things I was suddenly on the other side of the bridge with no idea of how I got there, cars honking, bumping over the messy pavement. Chinatown, fucking Chinatown.
