PROGRESS! Gina Trapani on What’s Up With the Mercury AMP Converter

Quick ad: HEY SAN FRANCISCO — Postlight co-founders Rich Ziade and Paul Ford are heading your way next week! We’re attending the NewCo Shift Forum so say hi if you’re there, and—we’ll be hosting drinks at Whitechapel on February 7 at 7PM. Come by and say hi! If you have any questions just drop a line to hello+whitechapel@postlight.com. See you soon, California.

At Postlight we build software. Sometimes we just have an idea and we build a thing, which is why we have Postlight Labs. And one of the things we built is called the “Mercury AMP Converter.” Which takes just about any web page and converts it into a Google-defined “Accelerated Mobile Pages” page.

Which means, give or take, that the AMP page shows up in the top of search results when you search Google on a mobile phone. Which is a big deal because all kinds of people want that top result.

Gina Trapani, Director of Engineering at Postlight, has an update on how the Converter is doing, and what we’ve been doing to improve it. Because software is never done. Read her post here.

Also worth noting: One of the biggest and most valid criticisms of AMP was the way it hid your URL, which represents all kinds of risk in an era of fake news. That’s changing, and Gina explains how we’re adapting our product to apply new capabilities.
