How to get through painful family conversations this Thanksgiving

How to get through painful family conversations this Thanksgiving

  1. Listen to what the people in your family have to say. Don’t say anything right away. If people expect an instant reply, say, “I am thinking quietly to see if I can understand your point of view.” See if you can understand their point of view.
  2. This is really hard and you won’t get it totally right. The reason no one gets it right is: It’s really hard.
  3. When it is safe to do so, go home.

P.S. This is the advice I would give to myself. But this year my wife and I are just doing it at home with our kids. If it’s not too rainy we might go to the parade. Sometimes it’s just too complex and you need to reset.
