How to get through painful family conversations this Thanksgiving
How to get through painful family conversations this Thanksgiving
- Listen to what the people in your family have to say. Don’t say anything right away. If people expect an instant reply, say, “I am thinking quietly to see if I can understand your point of view.” See if you can understand their point of view.
- This is really hard and you won’t get it totally right. The reason no one gets it right is: It’s really hard.
- When it is safe to do so, go home.
P.S. This is the advice I would give to myself. But this year my wife and I are just doing it at home with our kids. If it’s not too rainy we might go to the parade. Sometimes it’s just too complex and you need to reset.
