Caricatures
Some nights I can’t sleep after a long day building digital platforms for large or growing organizations. A good insomniac activity is searching through texts, organized in reverse chronological order, on Archive.org. The search term needs to be a nice, visual word, like “ornament,” “illustrated,” or “caricature.”
Caricature is a very fruitful search and I return to it once or twice a year and always discover something new. For example there is 1813’s An historical sketch of the art of caricaturing : with graphic illustrations, which yielded the above illustration. Or, a bit further down, 1868’s: Geographical fun: being humourous outlines of various countries.
Or 1844’s The miniature painter’s manual:
And then this very weird book, 1911’s Club men of Columbus in caricature, with affectionately mocking portraits of the well-to-do professionals of Ohio:
