Returning to the Devices
At which point Fremington goes back to the gym.
David Fremington, with a crush, is once again at the YMCA trying to become more handsome and exciting through exercise. He is there with his friend Aileen. On the way over he tried to talk about something other than his crush, but couldn’t, so Aileen listened patiently as he went on for 10 minutes. Then she told him about her own life.
They climb on to the elliptical machines and press buttons. He chooses the cross-country weight-loss course. Aileen chooses whatever option thin, attractive women choose. Right before he begins to exercise, David turns to her:
“Aileen.”
“Yes.”
“Let’s roll.” He nods, mouth open, stretching out the hard “o”.
She nods back, takes a moment, lowers her voice, and says urgently, “Justice,” hissing on the “s”.
